Old friends think I’m incurable. Elevator operators and political workers want to come along. People I’ve just met don’t quite get what it’s about. So what’s up with the tour?

Allow me to make a case for a fact-finding mission, reconnaissance operation, self-designed fellowship, barnstorming tour. Let me argue for some fresh helpings of a delicious kind of radicalism sniffed out along the way. Forage is the first word, friends, because we’re on the lookout for models growing wild and quiet (and maybe raucous) somewhere Out There. The other word is Build, because that’s what we’d like to do wherever we stop.

You won’t find any justifications for a road trip here–there are cases, boxes, books, and PBS series a’ plenty to tally that score.

No, it is important that this tour is not just a trip–it’s a frankly ambitious and gentle project to model a circulatory system of ideas, skills, and allies. It’s also a fact-finding mission to learn about delicious and strategic versions of the future that people around the nation are building today.

Have you and I had a conversation in the past two years about buying land with climate change in mind? Made schemes to retain effervescent collaboration without moving to a commune? Totaled the skills of people we know and come up with a sum of possibility?

That’s what this tour is about.

In response to requests that we share the tour, this site was built. It features and will feature words, media, tools, recipes, book titles, locations, and many things good and salty from the tour. I’m hoping you enjoy these offerings and find them useful as you create the future(s) where you are.

Whether we’re helping you take a respite from work or helping you (in person) work on a project where you are, it’s my hope that you’ll come to think of this tour project as a group adventure. It’s true that I’m venturing off to meet models for community both green and ripe, but I’m also aiming to connect with the circuits electrified by people I already know.
