From what I could find with a quick search, there are a few varieties of Japanese elderberries, both black and red. Look for the black ones, as most of the reds are toxic. Elders tend to ripen mid-late summer, but you can also gather the flowers for tea, jams, and wine. Do let me know if you find any in your own experiments.

The syrup's for both medicine and pleasure, though honestly, mostly for pleasure with a gesture toward medicine.

I'm somewhat ashamed to admit that I've never had an elderberry... Perhaps there's a Japanese variety?

Also: are you planning to use the syrup for medicinal uses? Culinary? Both?

I wish I could have been in the audience my dear. What a treat. Wish I could view it full screen. The audience was definitely roaring ...I could hear that in the camera crew. : ) Whoa whoa, I can feel the temperature rising.

Here are a few pictures from the Johns Creek Parade. http://www.meetup.com/chickens/photos/

Local meetup group with over 800 members supporting urban chickens and sustainability.
Apparently it went over very well with the crowd.

We are building a float for a Johns Creek parade. I will send pictures later. Dec 8. It is a 16 foot trailer that will have a small coop on it built especially for the day. Members will be walking along with it and some will be carrying their chickens. Apparently we got a permit to march!

You lit my fire to pry off my old wipers today and install the new ones that have been in my backseat for 2 weeks. Since the weather's lovely today, I'll have to wait for the next storm to report results.
